Project Objective: Some sites are more challenging than others. This one is very steep, extremely narrow and not very deep. It's a neighborhood where the houses are virtually built out to the lot side lines. Thus the tight interior had to fit an active young family comfortably, taking maximum advantage of the space available. We kept the main family spaces on the middle floor, which was a flight of steps down in the front yard and a flight of steps up in the back. The bedrooms went upstairs, and the lowest level was made over into more family spaces that open to the back yard. Because the house has good views to the back, the addition of plentiful windows make the spaces there feel larger.
